How did Ben and I meet? It all began in the late summer of 2008 when we both applied for jobs at the illustrious Puppet Showplace Theatre in Brookline. I applied to work in the box office, while Ben was a contender for the Marketing Coordinator position. I am fairly certain we interviewed on the same day and that Ben's interview went long, running over while I nervously waited in the lobby and wondered if my car would get towed. A few weeks later we both started our new jobs and I remember being introduced to Ben and thinking "he's cute, how do I make him like me without flirting at work?"
After some not so subtle flirting "the phone is for you, stud" (give me a break - it was a puppet theatre!), Ben asked me out to a movie... which we never made it to because we spent too much time talking over dinner. When our date ended much later, I went home with the biggest smile on my face because it was, bar none, the best first date I'd ever had, plus Ben told me he wanted to build his own personal library, so I was sold. For the first time in my life, I actually swooned. For the next several months we had our, very tame, version of an office romance, which really just meant we pretended we barely knew each other during the one day each week we worked together.
Ben: What Karen leaves out is that I had a hard time not staring at her when she didn't notice. Also that I made every effort to spend time with her on the job. Like breaking my back to wash the front window so she could paint it every week... or asking her to go on an errand with me around Brookline that really had no point other than me wanting to spend time with her. Yes, I know that I should've stopped acting like an idiot and just asked her out.
